Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who represents Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of critical comments on social media regarding recent economic developments and legislation.

On September 4, 2025, Cleaver addressed the impact of a piece of legislation he called "The Big Ugly Bill," stating: "The Big Ugly Bill was the largest redistribution of wealth from the working class to the wealthiest 1% in history, ripping healthcare away from families while giving handouts to millionaires. Good luck 'rebranding' that."

Later that day, Cleaver commented on national economic conditions under former President Donald Trump: "Higher costs, rising unemployment, fewer jobs. The Trump Economy." This post came amid ongoing debates about economic performance and job growth.

On September 5, 2025, following the release of new federal employment data, Cleaver wrote: "This morning, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics released one of the worst jobs reports since the pandemic. It shows America lost jobs in June, hiring slowed to its worst level since 2021, and unemployment is rising. Surely this isn’t the 'Golden Age' that Trump talks about."

Cleaver has served in Congress since 2005 after succeeding Karen McCarthy and is known for his commentary on economic and legislative issues. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City at age 78, Cleaver graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1972.
