Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who represents Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, addressed several national concerns in a series of social media posts on September 3 and 4, 2025.
On September 3, Cleaver commented on the economic challenges facing American farmers amid ongoing trade tensions with China. He wrote, “farmers will face a mountain of supplies just as trade tensions w/ China dim prospects for American exports. Crop prices have been depressed as a result. Tariffs are also raising costs for key farm inputs like fertilizer, adding to the financial strain." (September 3, 2025).
The following day, Cleaver turned his attention to public health policy and its intersection with politics. In another post dated September 4, he stated: "Politicizing public health endangers all our communities
I applaud the public servants who were willing to protect the American people by standing up to Secretary Kennedy’s anti-science approach.
It’s about time Republicans in Congress do the same." (September 4, 2025).
Later that same day, Cleaver highlighted issues related to affordable housing shortages across the United States. He said: "Communities across the nation are facing a shortage of affordable housing, which is exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis hurting American families.
I’m working with @USRepMikeFlood to revamp the HOME program to expand affordable housing nationwide." (September 4, 2025).
Cleaver has served in Congress since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005 and currently resides in Kansas City. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and now aged 78, he graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
