Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, used his social media platform on September 2, 2025, to voice concerns about recent legislative actions and their impact on his constituents.
In a post from September 2, Cleaver wrote, “I’m not going to lay down, because somebody decided in Washington that they wanted to mess up our community and our state.” He added that he would continue to fight for the voices of #MO05.
Cleaver criticized President Trump and Congressional Republicans’ health care legislation in another post the same day. He stated, President Trump and Congressional Republicans' Big Ugly Bill will ensure "overall private health insurance marketplace premiums will climb at the same time as health care tax credits fall" And it "will disproportionately affect rural Americans."
Later that afternoon, Cleaver addressed issues related to tax policy and social safety net programs. He posted, Instead of working to lower housing and healthcare costs for working class families, President Trump and Republicans in Congress enacted another massive tax cut for billionaires while gutting Medicaid and Food Stamps. No wonder families are frustrated.
Cleaver has represented Missouri’s 5th District since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944, Cleaver currently resides in Kansas City and is an alumnus of Prairie View A&M University.
