Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, posted several messages on social media reflecting on Labor Day, the role of unions, and current political developments.

On September 1, 2025, Cleaver marked the holiday by acknowledging labor’s historical achievements: "Happy Labor Day! From securing safer working conditions to establishing the 40-hour work week, union workers have built a stronger, fairer, and more prosperous nation. Today and every day let us honor the achievements of American workers!"

Later that day, he highlighted concerns about democratic participation and criticized what he described as threats to worker representation: "As we celebrate the solidarity of American workers during #LaborDay, we are reminded that working families built this nation — and they should be the ones who decide its future. This mid-decade power grab is an attack on our voices, our votes, and our democracy. We won’t stand" (September 1, 2025).

The following day, Cleaver addressed ongoing political disputes in Washington: "As Republicans push for another harmful government shutdown and block the release of the Epstein Files, I’m back in Washington to fight for transparency and a bipartisan funding agreement for the American people. Let’s get to work!" (September 2, 2025).

Cleaver has represented Missouri's 5th District since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. He was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. Cleaver earned his bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1972.
