Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who has represented Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, recently used his social media platform to express concerns about federal actions and a tragic event in Minneapolis.

On August 26, 2025, Cleaver posted: "In the past month, the president has purged senior military leadership, sent American troops into our nation’s capital, raided the home of a political adversary, and attempted to seize control of the central bank. Now he’s openly saying people want a dictator."

The following day, on August 27, he commented on the financial and economic implications of recent troop deployments: "Not only is the deployment of American troops into major cities a waste of hundreds of millions of dollars that could be better spent investing in local law enforcement and crime prevention programs, but it’s also a drag on local economies."

Later that same day, Cleaver responded to reports from Minnesota: "I’m devastated to learn of the mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis. As first responders continue their work to save lives, let us pray for the health and safety of the victims and their families."

Cleaver has served as Missouri's 5th District representative since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. He was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. Cleaver graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
