Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who represents Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently voiced concerns about economic policies and their impact on everyday Americans through a series of posts on his social media account.
On August 21, 2025, Cleaver attributed rising prices to specific government actions, stating: "Prices are up because of Trump Tariffs and the #BigUGLYLaw – and everyday people are stuck footing the bill. We deserve an economy that works for all of us, not just the 1%."
Continuing this theme on August 22, 2025, Cleaver highlighted worries from local healthcare leaders regarding Medicare costs: "Met with #MO05 hospital leaders who are deeply concerned about looming Medicare premium hikes. If the enhanced tax credits expire – undermined by the GOP’s #BigUGLYLaw – nearly 338,000 Missourians and 24 million Americans will pay the price. Families can’t afford this."
Later that day, he criticized what he described as manipulation of economic data: "This is the Trump playbook: rig the numbers so working families and seniors get shortchanged while the wealthy get ahead. Manipulating economic stats isn’t just cooking the books, it’s stealing benefits Americans have earned."
Cleaver has served in Congress since 2005 after succeeding Karen McCarthy. He was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and now resides in Kansas City. Cleaver graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
