Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, used his social media platform this week to comment on energy costs, health insurance rates, and community health initiatives.

On August 19, 2025, Cleaver addressed rising utility bills in a post that stated: "Democrats fought to bring clean power online, lower bills, and give consumers choices. Republicans knowingly voted to raise your energy costs. Now the bills are coming due.

Under Trump:

-Utilities have already requested $29B in rate hikes, doubling last year

-Clean Energy Tax"

The following day, August 20, he commented on increases in health insurance premiums: “Insurance companies have proposed the highest rate increases since 2018.”

Make no mistake, health insurance rates have increased as a direct result of the Trump administration’s disastrous policies.

Later that same day, Cleaver shared news about a local initiative aimed at improving access to healthy food options: "It was an honor to join @KanbesMarkets to celebrate the 100thhealthy corner store location!

In too many neighborhoods, families have had to choose between what’s close and what’s healthy. That’s why I was proud to secure $500,000 in community project funding to uplift their https://t.co/RNpTktaIGQ"

Cleaver has been active in Congress for nearly two decades after replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, Cleaver holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Prairie View A&M University (1972). He has focused on issues affecting his constituents’ economic and physical well-being throughout his tenure.
