Emanuel Cleaver addresses rural housing reform and rising costs under GOP policies

Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, used his social media platform on August 18 and 19, 2025, to address issues of housing and the rising cost of living.

On August 18, Cleaver highlighted the importance of housing for communities across America. He stated, "Whether you living in a rural town or a big city, housing is the heart of strong communities. That’s why I am proud to join my colleague, @RepZachNunn, to introduce the bipartisan Rural Housing Service Reform Act – because everyone, regardless of zip code – deserve a safe," in a post made at 21:15 UTC.

A subsequent tweet posted on August 18 at 21:24 UTC contained only a link: "https://t.co/Q0kCrdpjKa".

The following day, Cleaver criticized former President Donald Trump and Republican policies regarding tariffs and their impact on everyday expenses. In his post from August 19 at 14:15 UTC he wrote, "Donald Trump and Republicans are making it harder to afford everyday expenses. Trump’s reckless tariffs are driving up the cost of essentials. And the Big, Ugly Bill makes groceries, health care, and utilities more expensive. I’m working to end this madness and make an".

Cleaver has been active in Congress since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005 and currently resides in Kansas City. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944, he graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
