Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who represents Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently used his social media platform to address legislative and social issues, including concerns about Republican policy proposals, personal stories of fear within communities, and the ongoing fight for voting rights.

On August 5, 2025, Cleaver criticized a Republican bill by stating, "Republicans Big Ugly Bill will not only take food off the table of vulnerable families, but it will also harm local small businesses in communities across the country. All to fund more tax breaks for the wealthy and giant corporations."

Later that day, he shared a personal account highlighting anxiety faced by individuals fearing displacement: “He has to live under that fear of somebody knocking on the door and dragging him out of the house, just like they did in Derry when he was young” “I am just worried about him. Until recently, I hadn’t heard him cry about it.”

On August 6, 2025, Cleaver reflected on a historic milestone: "On this day 60 years ago, the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was signed into law. But our fight to defend voting rights is not over. Together, we must keep pushing to pass legislation like the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act to ensure EVERY American can make their voice"

Cleaver has served as Missouri’s 5th District representative since 2005 after succeeding Karen McCarthy. He was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
