Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who has represented Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, addressed several political and social issues in a series of posts on July 29, 2025.
In response to a recent violent incident, Cleaver wrote, "My heart breaks over the mass shooting that took place in New York. As we pray for the victims and those devastated by this act of senseless gun violence, let us also thank the first responders who prevented further destruction. And let us recommit to enacting gun safety laws" (July 29, 2025).
Later that day, Cleaver commented on efforts related to redistricting: "Any effort to install a mid-decade gerrymander that silences the voices of communities across Western Missouri will fail. Rather than wasting taxpayer dollars attempting to rig the system, the GOP should focus on bipartisan solutions that will lower costs for families." (July 29, 2025).
Addressing economic concerns and presidential conduct abroad, he stated: "As American families struggle to keep up with the cost of housing and everyday goods, exacerbated by the administration’s tariff taxes, the President is in Scotland on a taxpayer funded trip to promote the opening of his private golf course. It’s blatant corruption" (July 29, 2025).
Cleaver was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. He earned his Bachelor of Science from Prairie View A&M University in 1972.
