Independence, MO - Visit Independence, the Convention and Visitors Bureau for the City of Independence, Missouri, has announced the appointment of Allison Calvin as its first Executive Director. This marks a new phase in promoting Independence as a travel destination.
Allison Calvin brings ten years of experience in destination marketing within the Kansas City metro area. She previously worked with eXplore Lawrence (Kansas) as the Director of Marketing and Communications since 2023. Her past roles include positions at the Olathe Chamber of Commerce and Visit Overland Park, both in Kansas.
"We are excited for Allison Calvin to lead Visit Independence," said Charlie Dissell, President of the Board of Directors for Visit Independence. "Her expertise and vision will be instrumental in establishing our organization and promoting the unique attractions and rich history of Independence.”
Calvin expressed her enthusiasm about joining Visit Independence: "I am honored to join Visit Independence and look forward to working with the community, the Kansas City region, and Missouri Tourism to highlight all that Independence has to offer."
During her time at eXplore Lawrence, Calvin enhanced Lawrence’s profile as a vibrant destination, achieving measurable tourism growth. Under her leadership, ExploreLawrence.com saw increased user engagement and digital advertising success.
Dissell added confidence in Calvin's leadership: “under her leadership, we are confident Visit Independence will thrive and become a key driver of economic growth for our city."
The City of Independence is enhancing its tourism offerings ahead of significant events like the World Cup in 2026 and its bicentennial in 2027. Calvin’s regional experience was crucial to her hiring before these major events.
The city boasts attractions such as the Harry S. Truman Library & Museum, Cable Dahmer Arena, National Frontier Trails Museum, among others.
“Independence is well-positioned to showcase its diverse cultural heritage,” added Calvin. “I’m ready for the world to see what Independence has."
Calvin's first day is set for Monday, July 28, 2025.
Visit Independence was established in December 2024 with a mission to promote tourism in Independence through economic impact support for local businesses while celebrating its unique character.
