Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, posted a series of tweets on July 23, 2025, criticizing recent economic and legislative developments impacting American families.

In his first post at 15:55 UTC, Cleaver stated, “On July 15, data from the U.S Department of Agriculture (USDA) showed that ground beef costs $6.12 a pound, up nearly 12% from a year ago, the highest it’s ever been.” President Trump’s tariff taxes are raising costs on American families.

At 16:57 UTC the same day, Cleaver commented on healthcare premiums: “Insurers that offer plans through the ACA are planning an average premium increase of 15% for 2026 — the largest increase in seven years” Because Republicans ended tax credits for the ACA, American families will see their insurance premiums skyrocket.

Later at 17:59 UTC, he addressed legislative activity in Congress: Instead of staying in Washington and searching for bipartisan solutions that will lower costs for families, Republicans shut down the House and kicked off their summer vacation early to avoid voting on providing transparency to the American people.

Cleaver has represented Missouri’s 5th District since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, Cleaver graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
