Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, recently used his social media platform to highlight ongoing concerns about housing affordability and federal education funding.
On July 21, 2025, Cleaver cited the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s annual report in a post stating: "As the @NLIHC’s Out of Reach Report makes clear: American families are facing a national housing affordability crisis—and it’s imperative that Congress take action to #RaiseTheWage, expand the supply of affordable housing, and lower housing costs For The People!"
In a separate tweet posted on the same day, Cleaver emphasized systemic issues behind housing instability: “While the stories and circumstances are unique, the root causes of housing instability are not: there are not enough decent, affordable, and accessible homes in communities, and wages have not kept pace with the ever-increasing cost of rent”.
Later that day, Cleaver addressed federal education funding delays under the Trump administration. He wrote: "ICYMI, last week, I joined 150 House Democrats in demanding the Trump administration release the nearly $7 billion in congressionally mandated education funding."
Cleaver has represented Missouri's 5th District for nearly two decades after succeeding Karen McCarthy in 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, he graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
