Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who has represented Missouri’s 5th District in the U.S. Congress since 2005, used his social media platform on July 18, 2025, to criticize recent actions by President Trump and Congressional Republicans regarding public broadcasting funding and federal healthcare programs.
In a post published at 16:47 UTC, Cleaver stated: "PBS and NPR are instrumental in Western Missouri, playing a key role in relaying important information during crises while also providing beloved public programming like Sesame Street and local sportscasts. Last night, at the order of President Trump, Republicans defunded them."
Later that day at 19:11 UTC, Cleaver addressed economic concerns for families: "Because of President Trump’s tariff taxes and Republican cuts to federal healthcare programs, hardworking families will see hikes to their healthcare costs moving forward. At 20:34 UTC on the same day, Cleaver expanded his criticism of current policies with another post: "The president hasn’t lowered costs for American families. He hasn’t ended the war in Ukraine. Cleaver was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1972.
PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and NPR (National Public Radio) have historically provided educational content and critical information during emergencies across regions such as Western Missouri.
Cleaver replaced Karen McCarthy as representative of Missouri's 5th district in 2005.
