The City of Independence, in collaboration with the Human Relations Commission, is set to present the inaugural Independence Champion of Non-Discrimination (ICON) Awards. This event will take place during Pride in Englewood on Saturday, June 28, at 11 AM at the Englewood Arts Center.
The ICON Awards were established to recognize individuals who promote equity, inclusion, and dignity within the community. The awards are part of a broader effort by the Human Relations Commission to foster mutual respect and understanding for everyone residing or working in Independence.
For 2025, two individuals have been selected as ICON Award honorees. Merideth Rose and Rev. Anthony Mondaine are recognized for their significant contributions to supporting underrepresented communities.
Merideth Rose serves as CEO of Cornerstones of Care. She has used her personal experiences to drive healing and change. Under her leadership, Cornerstones of Care assists thousands of families each year through initiatives such as Build Trybe, which focuses on youth empowerment, workforce development, and environmental justice.
Rev. Anthony Mondaine made history as the first person of color elected to public office in Independence. He is known for his roles as a pastor, educator, and community leader. His involvement with the School Board and Juneteenth Committee has left a lasting impact through advocacy and mentorship across the city.
The community is invited to join in honoring these individuals and celebrating their efforts towards creating an inclusive environment in Independence.
