Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a U.S. Congressman representing Missouri's 5th district since 2005, recently shared his concerns about several policy issues through a series of tweets. Cleaver, who was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City, addressed topics ranging from food insecurity to proposed federal budget cuts.
On June 20, 2025, Rep. Cleaver highlighted the growing issue of food insecurity within communities in Missouri's 5th district. In his tweet, he stated: "This morning, I joined leaders in #MO05 to shine a light on the sharp rise in food insecurity hitting our communities." He criticized the Trump administration’s reductions to federal nutrition programs during Hunger Action Month and emphasized the importance of protecting families' rights.
Later that day, Cleaver commented on legislative developments regarding healthcare spending. He tweeted: "The Senate’s version of a bill to enact President Trump’s agenda goes further to reduce Medicaid spending than the House-passed bill does." He expressed concern over what he referred to as "The House’s Big, Ugly Bill," which he claimed would strip healthcare from millions of Americans while criticizing Senate Republicans for exacerbating these issues.
Additionally, Rep. Cleaver engaged with students at Literacy KC regarding potential budgetary changes proposed by the Trump Administration. On June 20th, he noted: "Today, I had the privilege of meeting with students at @LiteracyKC to discuss the Trump Administration’s proposed 'skinny budget'. This proposal includes the complete elimination of $729 million in funding to adult education programs- a devastating cut that would directly". The congressman expressed concern over significant funding cuts affecting adult education programs.
Emanuel Cleaver has served as a congressional representative for Missouri's 5th District since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005 and holds a BS degree from Prairie View A&M University.
