The City of Independence Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department is set to host a rededication ceremony for the Rotary Park playground on Thursday, May 22. The event marks the completion of a $135,000 upgrade aimed at revitalizing one of the city's most frequented parks.

The renovated playground now features modern play elements such as spinning structures, balancing pods, and an agility course designed for both children and adults. These enhancements are part of efforts to bring new energy to the park.

Residents, elected officials, and local media have been invited to attend the ceremony to see the new additions firsthand. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Rotary Park located at 10615 E 24th St S in Independence, Missouri. Special guest Comet the Dogg from the KC Comets will also be present.

This renovation is funded by the Parks Improvement Sales Tax, which was renewed by voters in 2010 and made permanent. It represents the first major update at Rotary Park in two decades.

“The upgrade to Rotary Park is a fantastic example of how the Parks Improvement Sales Tax delivers long-lasting value to our community,” said Morris Heide, Director of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism. “These improvements reflect our commitment to creating spaces that invite everyone to come out, connect, and—most importantly—play.”

The transformation at Rotary Park follows a similar renovation at Glendale Park in 2019. Plans are underway for future upgrades at Mill Creek and Santa Fe Parks as part of ongoing efforts to enhance green spaces across Independence.
