Emanuel Cleaver, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Missouri's 5th district since 2005, has recently expressed his views on a range of policy issues through social media. Cleaver, who was born in Waxahachie, Texas, and graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1972, resides in Kansas City.
On May 14, Cleaver criticized the Republican budget proposal for potentially detrimental impacts on healthcare and food security. He stated that the proposal would "rip healthcare away from nearly 14 million Americans and take food off the table of families who rely on SNAP just to give another handout to the billionaire class," while also increasing the national deficit. "It’s terrible policy", he concluded.
In a subsequent tweet dated May 15, Cleaver commented on trade policies under President Trump. He highlighted concerns over tariffs, stating: “The higher tariffs will result in higher prices”. According to him, these measures reflect "the cost of President Trump’s chaotic, reckless trade war" affecting American consumers.
Later that day, Cleaver addressed financial ethics among lawmakers. Drawing an analogy with athletes' betting restrictions due to potential conflicts of interest or insider information, he advocated for prohibiting lawmakers from trading stocks. He voiced support for @Rep_Magaziner’s bipartisan TRUST in Congress Act as a measure towards ensuring ethical governance.
Cleaver has been an active voice in legislative matters since succeeding Karen McCarthy in Congress and continues to address various socio-economic issues impacting Americans today.
