Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Missouri's 5th district since 2005, has recently addressed several pressing issues through his social media posts. Cleaver, who succeeded Karen McCarthy and holds a degree from Prairie View A&M University, used Twitter to express his concerns about tariffs, economic inequality within political circles, and the housing affordability crisis.

On May 13, 2025, Rep. Cleaver highlighted the impact of tariffs under President Trump's administration. He stated that "Although President Trump backed down and paused some tariffs, America’s tariff rate is still higher than any time since WWII," emphasizing the financial burden on American families due to these "tariff taxes." He mentioned collaborating with Rep. Raskin to introduce legislation aimed at addressing this issue.

The following day, May 14, 2025, Cleaver criticized what he perceives as economic disparities facilitated by political influence. He remarked that "While the president believes American families should tighten the belt and forgo toys for their children," suggesting that the Trump family benefits financially through selling access to power.

Later on May 14th, Cleaver turned his attention to housing issues in America. He underscored the necessity for Congressional action by stating "As families continue to struggle with America’s housing affordability crisis." He expressed his commitment to leading discussions in Congress aimed at finding innovative solutions to increase housing supply and reduce costs nationwide.

Emanuel Cleaver was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City at age 78.
