Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who has served in the U.S. Congress representing Missouri's 5th district since 2005, recently expressed his concerns on social media regarding the proposed GOP budget and its potential impacts on healthcare and food assistance programs. Cleaver's comments also touched upon Medicaid and paid tribute to a former statesman.
On May 13, 2025, Rep. Cleaver stated that "The GOP budget will rip healthcare away from nearly 14 million Americans and raise costs for millions more." He further claimed that it would reduce food assistance for vulnerable groups such as children, seniors, veterans, and people with disabilities while benefiting billionaires like Elon Musk.
Later that day, Cleaver accused Republicans of misleading the public about their budget proposal’s impact on Medicaid. He referenced a report by the Congressional Budget Office when he posted "Republicans have misled the American people for months..." indicating that nearly 14 million Americans could lose Medicaid coverage under the proposed legislation.
In another tweet on May 13, Rep. Cleaver offered condolences to the family of Kit Bond, referring to him as "a superb statesman" and "an exemplary public servant." He acknowledged Bond's contributions to Missouri and shared his grief over this loss.
Emanuel Cleaver was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. A graduate of Prairie View A&M University with a BS degree earned in 1972, he has been serving his district since replacing Karen McCarthy in Congress two decades ago.
