The Independence Human Relations Commission in Independence, Missouri has announced that it is accepting nominations for the newly established Independence Champion of Non-Discrimination Award (ICON). The award aims to promote understanding and respect among people and will recognize both an individual and a local business.
According to the commission, individual nominees are expected to be those who demonstrate a commitment to preventing discrimination across various grounds, including race, color, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, ancestry, age, disability, or other statuses protected by federal or state law.
For the business category, nominees should be local businesses or organizations that make efforts to create a welcoming workplace culture and adhere to principles of non-discrimination on similar grounds.
Though the Human Relations Commission has been active for over 60 years since its establishment by the City Council in 1964, this marks the inaugural year for the ICON award. The commission also hands out the annual MLK Award during the MLK Celebration in January.
Nominations and inquiries are to be submitted to the commission's staff liaison, John Mayfield, at jmayfield@indepmo.org. The deadline for nominations is Friday, May 9, 2025. Award recipients will be honored on June 28th.
