Rep. On February 11, 2025, Rep. Cleaver criticized Elon Musk and President Trump for their approach to federal programs. He stated that while they claim to be eliminating "waste and fraud," they are instead "kneecapping universities, hospitals, and nonprofits" that contribute significantly to medical advancements. "Elon Musk and President Trump claim they’re gutting federal programs to 'eliminate waste and fraud.' In reality, they’re kneecapping universities, hospitals, and nonprofits in our communities that play a critical role in finding new treatments and cures for diseases like cancer…"
Later the same day, he addressed the Trump Administration's stance on federal court rulings. Cleaver described it as "deeply disturbing" that President Trump and Vice President Vance are promoting disregard for such rulings. He emphasized that Americans desire economic relief rather than a "constitutional crisis." "It is deeply disturbing that President Trump, Vice President Vance, and members of the Trump Administration are openly advocating for the flouting of federal court rulings. The American people want lower prices, not a constitutional crisis!"
On February 12, 2025, Rep. Cleaver met with local AFGE members to discuss challenges faced by federal workers under current administration policies.
