On February 11, 2025, Rep. Cleaver criticized Elon Musk and President Trump for their approach to federal programs. He stated that while they claim to be eliminating "waste and fraud," they are instead "kneecapping universities, hospitals, and nonprofits" that contribute significantly to medical advancements. Cleaver described it as "deeply disturbing" that President Trump and Vice President Vance are promoting disregard for such rulings. He emphasized that Americans desire economic relief rather than a "constitutional crisis."
