Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, has expressed concerns regarding recent economic and political developments through a series of tweets. Born in Waxahachie, Texas, in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, Cleaver graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
On February 7, 2025, Rep. Cleaver highlighted the impact of the Trump administration's policies on employment. He stated that “Private-sector employers and nonprofits are starting to lay off workers as a result of the Trump administration’s sweeping cuts and funding freezes, unleashing a wave of job losses that economists say could pick up steam in the coming weeks”.
Later that day, Cleaver addressed economic uncertainties faced by Americans due to tariff threats and stock market fluctuations. He noted that “Tariff threats, stock market swings and rapidly reversing executive orders are causing Americans across the political spectrum to feel considerably more pessimistic about the economy than they did before President Trump took office.” He emphasized the importance of stable governance.
In another tweet on February 7, Cleaver criticized congressional Republicans for their fiscal policies. He commented that "As Republicans in Congress focus on gutting critical government services to fund another round of tax cuts for the billionaire class, they’re leading the nation headlong into another Republican Shutdown."
