Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Missouri’s 5th district, has taken to social media to express his concerns regarding recent political developments. Cleaver, who succeeded Karen McCarthy in 2005, voiced his opposition to certain executive actions and legislative proposals through a series of tweets.
On February 4, 2025, Rep. Cleaver announced his decision to join numerous House Democrats in opposing a new executive order issued by the Trump Administration. The order imposes a "25% blanket tariff on Canadian imports," which Cleaver argues would "raise costs on everyday goods for American families." He called for the President and the administration to rescind this order. "That’s why I’m joining dozens of @HouseDemocrats in demanding the President and the Trump Administration rescind the executive order levying a 25% blanket tariff on Canadian imports—which would raise costs on everyday goods for American families."
The following day, February 5, 2025, Cleaver tweeted about ongoing efforts by Congressional Democrats to draft legislation aimed at upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens' private information. This initiative also seeks to prevent wealthy individuals from undermining federal governance. Cleaver stated that Democrats will continue their efforts alongside citizens against what he describes as extremism. "As Congressional Democrats draft legislation to uphold the rule of law, protect Americans’ private information, and prevent unaccountable billionaires from defunding the federal government, we will continue to stand with the people and push back against this extremism."
In another tweet posted on February 5, 2025, Rep. Cleaver criticized former President Trump for allegedly allowing Elon Musk to take control of federal agencies unlawfully and access private information without authorization. He expressed solidarity with lawmakers, federal workers, veterans, and citizens in calling for an end to these actions described as lawlessness. "The power belongs to the people—not unelected billionaires! As President Trump enables Elon Musk to illegally seize federal agencies and access private information, I joined lawmakers, federal workers, veterans, and law-abiding Americans to demand an end to this lawlessness."
