Last week, the Independence Police Department attended a ceremony where six of its officers were honored at the Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association's 53rd Annual Awards for Valor. The event recognized acts of bravery and dedication by law enforcement personnel.
Among those honored were Officer Steven Thompson, Officer Luke Buchanan, and the late Officer Cody Allen. They were named Officers of the Year for their response to a shooting incident on February 29th during an eviction notice served by Jackson County Process Server Drexel Mack. In this incident, Officer Cody Allen lost his life. Officer Buchanan was wounded in the stomach, while Officer Thompson suffered a graze wound to his arm. Both have since recovered and returned to duty. On Thursday, they received both the Gold Award for Valor and Officers of the Year awards. "Officer Allen's widow accepted the Officer of the Year award on Office Allen’s behalf."
Additionally, Sgt. Emily Kennon and Officer Luis Virgil received recognition with the Bronze Award of Valor for their efforts in responding to a welfare check request where they found an unconscious resident who survived thanks to their intervention.
Officer Allyx McCoy was awarded the Life-Saving Award for her prompt action in applying a tourniquet to a resident shot in the leg, which saved both his limb and life.
The Independence Police Department expressed pride in its officers' achievements: "Congratulations to our Independence Police Officers who were recognized for their courage, live-saving actions, and service to our community at this year’s Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association’s 53rd Annual Awards for Valor ceremony."
