Police Chief Adam Dustman has resigned from his position with the City of Independence, effective August 15, 2025. The city credited Dustman with leading the police department through a period of modernization and progress. During his time as chief, the department obtained new funding for operations, filled longstanding staff vacancies, acquired updated equipment, and developed new facilities to improve officer readiness and community engagement.

City Manager Zach Walker stated, “Chief Dustman’s leadership has brought important advancements to the department, and we are grateful for his service to the City of Independence. His commitment to supporting our officers and improving public safety will have a lasting impact.”

The city will work with Strategic Government Resources (SGR) on a nationwide search for an interim chief of police. While this process is underway, the City Manager’s Office plans to collaborate with the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) and members of the police command staff in selecting an interim leader who can maintain continuity and community trust.

Deputy Chief Jason Petersen will lead the department until an interim chief is chosen.
