Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who represents Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing federal policies on deportation, election representation, and housing discrimination.
On July 29, 2025, Cleaver criticized the administration’s approach to immigration enforcement, stating: "Despite promises that he would go after criminals and gang members—which we can all support—the president’s mass deportation policies continue to overwhelmingly ensnare individuals who are here legally, are no threat, and doing important work for our communities. It must stop."
Later the same day, Cleaver expressed gratitude for public backing against what he described as an unconstitutional effort in Missouri politics. He wrote: "Thank you both for your support. Together, the people of Missouri will defeat this unconstitutional and divisive effort to rig the system and silence the voices of Western Missourians. In Missouri and America, the PEOPLE choose their representatives—not the other way around."
On July 30, 2025, Cleaver addressed concerns about fair housing regulations: "The administration’s effort to sweep housing discrimination and segregation under the rug is completely unacceptable. The attack on Fair Housing laws will only embolden such heinous behavior, ensuring minority families are left with fewer options, resources, and environmental"
Cleaver has served in Congress since 2005 after succeeding Karen McCarthy as representative of Missouri's 5th District. He was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. Cleaver earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1972.
