Jackson County Health Department - Parents: Teens Say That You Have the Biggest Impact on Their Decisions About Sex

Parents: teens say that YOU have the biggest impact on their decisions about sex. Strengthen the trust between you and your teen by talking about things - big and small.

To help you get the conversation started, swipe through these images below!

You can also check out our “Making Proud Choices!” classes, which give 11-to-18-year-olds the knowledge and confidence to build healthy relationships and reduce their risk of STDs, HIV, and pregnancy. Stay tuned for more details!

Conversation Prompt: What are you looking forward to right now? Starting a conversation with a broad question like this lets your young person direct the conversation. Maybe they just want to keep things light and silly, or maybe something big is coming up that they want to share with you. By giving them space and putting them in charge you can strengthen your bond and show them that you're interested in all parts of their life.

Champion Tip: Remember that it's not one big TALK - but an ongoing dialogue. “The talk” about sex, love, or relationships shouldn’t be a one-time lecture. Instead, set the framework for an ongoing, age-appropriate dialogue that covers the basics like anatomy and good touch/bad touch, and progress to conversations about dating, consent, and birth control.

Conversation Prompt: What's your biggest dream? Does it feel achievable? Help your young person to envision the future they want to achieve by discussing practical ways to achieve their goals. Talking it out also helps to make their future feel tangible. When young people feel empowered and supported in their efforts, they are more likely to achieve them.

Champion Tip: Share your own experiences. Connect to your young person by sharing your own stories. Giving something of yourself allows you to share the vulnerability that often arises during sensitive conversation. Sharing can also break the ice if your young person is shy.
