Representative Emanuel Cleaver, who has served Missouri’s 5th District in the U.S. Congress since 2005, recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing economic and healthcare policy issues. Cleaver, born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, commented on rising costs for American families and critiqued Republican policy decisions as well as the impact of tariffs under President Trump.

On July 14, 2025, Cleaver wrote: "Life in America is already far too expensive. But rather than fight to lower healthcare costs for hardworking families, Republicans voted to rip healthcare away from 17 million Americans to fund more tax cuts for the wealthy. It’s shameful." He criticized Republican lawmakers for their approach to healthcare funding and tax policy.

Later that day, Cleaver addressed the impact of tariffs on consumers and businesses. On July 14, 2025, he stated: “77% of respondents said their companies are considering price increases of at least 5% in the next six months.” The presidents tariff taxes aren’t paid by foreign nations—they’re paid by American consumers and small businesses. He argued that tariffs result in higher costs domestically rather than being absorbed by foreign entities.

On July 15, 2025, Cleaver commented further on the effect of tariffs imposed during President Trump’s administration. He wrote: President Trump promised he would lower costs for American families on “Day One”. Instead, his tariff taxes are raising prices on consumers and small businesses alike, while alienating our trading partners and ceding power to the likes of China.

Cleaver succeeded Karen McCarthy in Congress in 2005. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
