Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a longstanding member of the U.S. Congress representing Missouri's 5th district since 2005, recently shared his views on several pressing issues via social media. Known for his active engagement in political discourse, Cleaver has served in Congress following Karen McCarthy's tenure and is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University.
On May 16, 2025, Cleaver expressed concern over President Trump's trade policies. He stated, "President Trump’s erratic tariff policies have already driven up costs for American families. Now, he’s planning to unilaterally set tariffs for over 150 countries, bypassing negotiations, and further destabilizing our economy. This isn’t strategy - it’s economic sabotage."
Later that day, Cleaver criticized a Republican legislative proposal known as the "One Big Beautiful Bill." He remarked that the bill would negatively impact social services while benefiting wealthier citizens: "The GOP's 'One Big Beautiful Bill' is a disaster in the making. Slashing Medicaid, cutting food aid, and repealing clean energy credits-all to fund tax breaks for the wealthy." He added that this approach was "cruelty disguised as policy."
On May 19, 2025, Cleaver offered support to President Joe Biden amid personal health challenges: "Today, I’m praying for President Joe Biden, Dr. Biden, and the entire Biden family as President Biden begins his fight against cancer." Cleaver conveyed solidarity with Americans hoping for a swift recovery for the former president.
Cleaver was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City.
