Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who has represented Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, posted a series of tweets on November 3, 2025, addressing concerns about federal food assistance and rising living costs.
In his first tweet at 19:26 UTC, Cleaver criticized the administration's handling of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding and its impact on local businesses. He wrote, "Not only was the administration illegally withholding SNAP funding that families need to keep food on the table, they’re also going after local grocery stores who are trying to help keep their neighbors fed. The cruelty is unfathomable."
An hour later, Cleaver addressed economic pressures faced by Missouri families in another post at 20:28 UTC. He stated, "The number one concern I hear from families in Missouri is the unsustainable rise in grocery, housing, and health care costs. But instead of working with Congress to lower costs for hardworking families, the president is denying it’s even a problem. Completely out of touch."
Cleaver also invited constituents interested in public policy to apply for internships in his Washington D.C. office for the upcoming spring term. In his tweet at 21:30 UTC he said, "Interested in learning about policy while serving the people of #MO05? Then apply for an internship in my Washington D.C. office to begin next spring! More information here:"
Emanuel Cleaver succeeded Karen McCarthy as representative of Missouri’s 5th district and has held this position since 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, Cleaver earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1972.
