Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who represents Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, criticized recent Republican actions on healthcare and economic policy in a series of posts on October 3, 2025.

In his first post, Cleaver stated, "Making the largest cut to Medicaid in history wasn’t enough. Now, Republicans are working to end ACA tax credits that help working class families afford quality healthcare, ensuring skyrocketing costs. They shut down the government over it." (October 3, 2025).

Later that day, he addressed concerns about housing affordability and tariffs: "American families were already facing a housing affordability crisis—and now the President’s tariff taxes are going to drive up housing costs even further. This reckless economic experiment must come to an end." (October 3, 2025).

Cleaver reiterated his position on health care access in another post: "The American people are already struggling with the cost-of-living, which is why they want an extension of ACA tax credits that help working families afford their health premiums. While Republicans shut down the government to prevent that, we’ll keep fighting to #ProtectOurCare" (October 3, 2025).

Emanuel Cleaver has represented Missouri’s 5th District since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005 and has lived in Kansas City for many years after being born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944. He graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.

Cleaver's comments come amid ongoing debates over healthcare funding and economic policy at the federal level.
