Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, addressed several issues on his social media account on September 18, 2025. His posts included criticism of the Trump administration's actions regarding free speech, a call for bipartisan cooperation to prevent a government shutdown, and advocacy for increased awareness of polycystic kidney disease.
On September 18, Cleaver wrote: "The Trump administration using the extraordinary power of the federal government to silence political opposition and undermine the free speech rights of American citizens and private businesses is dangerous and completely unacceptable."
Later that day, he commented on ongoing budget negotiations in Congress: "Democrats are committed to passing a bipartisan budget that will prevent a harmful Republican shutdown and a massive spike in healthcare costs for working class families. My colleagues across the aisle must end the extreme partisanship and come back to the table."
Cleaver also highlighted public health concerns, particularly regarding polycystic kidney disease (PKD): "With roughly 600,000 Americans impacted by PKD across the US, we must take action to raise awareness & combat this disease. That's why @RepSamGraves & I introduced a resolution to designate September as National Polycystic Kidney Disease Awareness Month."
Emanuel Cleaver has represented Missouri’s 5th District in Congress since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. He was born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently resides in Kansas City. Cleaver earned his bachelor’s degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1972.
