Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a member of the U.S. Congress representing Missouri’s 5th district since 2005, recently used social media to express concerns about the future of Social Security and efforts he claims could undermine the program.
On August 14, 2025, Cleaver posted: "Just a few weeks ago, the Treasury Secretary stated publicly that the administration was implementing a 'backdoor' way to privatize Social Security. We won’t stand for it. #ProtectOurChecks https://t.co/08C0YQ9Ahw".
In another post on the same day, Cleaver addressed broader political tensions over Social Security, writing: "Social Security isn’t an entitlement; it’s money you earn through a lifetime of hard work. As President Trump and Republicans threaten to end Social Security as we know it, @HouseDemocrats are standing strong for hardworking seniors and their benefits. #ProtectOurChecks https://t.co/BzuQjdGCtf".
Cleaver also highlighted the importance of Social Security to his constituents in Missouri’s 5th district: "Nearly 144,000 Missourians in #MO05 depend on Social Security every single month—and they deserve the benefits they’ve earned. I will never stop fighting to protect and expand your hard-earned benefits. #ProtectOurChecks https://t.co/wxfGjTkSuR".
Cleaver has represented Missouri's 5th District since succeeding Karen McCarthy in 2005 and is known for advocating on behalf of senior citizens in his district. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944, Cleaver resides in Kansas City and graduated from Prairie View A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1972.
