Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Missouri’s 5th district, has shared a series of tweets addressing both economic policies and mental health awareness. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944, Cleaver has been a congressional representative since 2005, following his graduation from Prairie View A&M University with a BS in 1972.
On May 5, 2025, Rep. Cleaver criticized the president's approach to funding tax breaks for billionaires by reducing essential programs such as Medicaid and SNAP. He stated: "As the president actively works to fund another tax break for his billionaire buddies, paid for by gutting programs that American families rely on like Medicaid and SNAP, he thinks families should learn to do more with less." He characterized this approach as "cynical" and an example of "failed trickle-down economics."
Later that day, Cleaver highlighted the importance of mental health support systems by referencing the establishment of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. In his tweet, he reminded individuals of available resources during Mental Health Awareness Month: "In 2020, Congress established the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, here to support you 24/7 by text, call, or chat by dialing 988 or going to https://t.co/JAdnWrqMT8."
Cleaver further emphasized mental health awareness by acknowledging common struggles faced by many Americans. He wrote: "It’s okay to not be okay. 1 in 5 adults in the United States experiences mental health challenges." This message underscores his commitment to ending stigma and promoting hope during Mental Health Awareness Month.
Emanuel Cleaver continues to advocate for both economic equity and mental health support as part of his legislative focus.
