Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who has represented Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress since 2005, posted a series of statements on September 12, 2025, addressing political violence and expressing disappointment with recent actions by Missouri’s Legislature.

In a post made at 16:40 UTC, Cleaver wrote, "This is real leadership. Political violence is an attack on all of us, and we all must come together to condemn it whenever it rears its ugly, despicable head."

An hour later, at 17:47 UTC, Cleaver continued his remarks regarding the national political climate and the president’s role. He stated, "At every opportunity to turn the temperature down and bring the country together, the president instead chooses to dial it up and divide the nation. It’s deeply disappointing and extremely dangerous. Political violence must be condemned universally."

Later that evening at 20:24 UTC, Cleaver commented on decisions made by Missouri lawmakers: "I’m deeply disappointed that Missouri’s Legislature put the wishes of Washington above the voices of their own constituents and the needs of our communities. But this fight is far from over. My full statement here:"

Cleaver has served as a member of Congress since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, he graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
