Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, who represents Missouri’s 5th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on September 11, 2025, addressing recent legislative events and commemorating former lawmakers.
In his first post of the day, Cleaver reflected on his participation at a memorial service for late members of Congress. He wrote, "I was honored to speak at the Memorial Service for Former Members of Congress, where we commemorated the lives and legacies of lawmakers who passed on in the past year. From Charlie Rangel to Bill Clay, some giants have been called home. Today and always, we’re grateful for https://t.co/RJI8CqTojp" (September 11, 2025).
Later that afternoon, Cleaver criticized economic policies under President Trump and House Republicans. He stated, "President Trump and House Republicans promised to lower the high cost of living. But the Trump Tariffs and the Big Ugly Bill are making life even more expensive while causing unemployment to rise to the highest level in years. https://t.co/qOtklZ5eMP" (September 11, 2025).
Cleaver concluded with concerns over civil liberties related to immigration enforcement: "The president’s extreme mass deportation policies are eroding the civil liberties of American citizens. We must continue to call out and push back against these dangerous policies that are leading to Americans being unlawfully detained. https://t.co/YAm2cVlWAW" (September 11, 2025).
Cleaver has served as Missouri’s 5th District representative since replacing Karen McCarthy in 2005. Born in Waxahachie, Texas in 1944 and currently residing in Kansas City, he is also an alumnus of Prairie View A&M University.
