Grain Valley educator: Acellus 'is a great data-collection tool'

Grain Valley School District has been using Acellus to help students and teachers achieve better results for several years to help pupils with credit recovery.

Jill Maxon, a Grain Valley School District teacher, said this year is the sixth academic year they have been using Acellus. She said they use it for credit recovery and studying for the Missouri HiSET test, which is the state's GED equivalent.

Maxon said COVID-19 complicated education delivery at the start.

"It was a mad dash to figure out what was best going to suit your students in a timely and effective manner," Maxon said in an interview with SE Kansas City News. "So we have, as a district, developed the usage of Google Classroom and also, from my end of it, specifically at my alternative school...where I use Acellus most often, we still deliver through Acellus."

Maxon said Acellus is an important resource for teachers and students.

"It's a huge value because it is a great data-collection tool," Maxon said. "We can see how our students are doing, when our students are logged on, when they're having issues with a question or a problem. So, as far as data collection, it's a great tool for that."

Maxon said she also uses Acellus to meet the needs of students who need help.

"As a teacher, if our students are struggling too bad in a — in special education, specifically — I can change the rigor of the class," Maxon said. "So I can lessen the rigor and to meet the needs of a student who might have an accommodation that suits and warrants the less rigor of the course itself."

Maxon said students can log on to Acellus anywhere because it's a web-based program, including their cell phones, computers or laptops.

Maxon said for her students, their courses are essential through Acellus because they are typically coming in a year behind and need those credits to return to high school, graduate with their friends or graduate early.

"The program that we're using previous to Acellus was more of a read, comprehend and then apply-type of program where Acellus is...teacher and student-focused," Maxon said.
